Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and motivations of code-mixing used in the dialogue of the Indonesian feature film Ada Apa dengan Cinta? Film, as a mass media product, functions not only as entertainment but also as a representation of social language practices. In a multilingual society such as Indonesia, code-mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon that is reflected in contemporary film dialogues. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using observation and note-taking techniques. The data consist of characters’ utterances containing code-mixing, which are analyzed based on their forms and underlying motivations.

The findings reveal that code-mixing appears in three main forms: insertion of words, phrases, and clauses, with word insertion being the most dominant form. The motivations behind the use of code-mixing include social identity, group solidarity, expressive and dramatic purposes, representation of urban youth realities, and the influence of globalization and popular culture. Code-mixing in the film functions not only as a reflection of everyday language practices but also as an artistic strategy to construct characters, depict social background, and enhance narrative atmosphere. Therefore, this study demonstrates that language in film plays a significant role in shaping meaning, characterization, and social representation within audiovisual works.
