Pengaruh Judi Online Terhadap Praktik Keagamaan Mahasiswa Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Medan

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of online gambling on the religious practices of students at UIN Sumatera Utara, Campus II Pancing. The phenomenon of online gambling, which has become increasingly accessible through smartphones, has reached various groups, including university students. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through interviews with students who had been involved in or were aware of online gambling practices within the campus environment. The theoretical framework used was Glock and Stark’s theory of religiosity, which places religious practice as one of the main dimensions of an individual’s religiosity. The findings indicate that involvement in online gambling affects the decline in the intensity of worship, reduced participation in religious activities, the emergence of feelings of guilt, and a decrease in the spiritual quality of students. The main factors encouraging students to engage in online gambling are peer influence, easy access to technology, and the desire to obtain instant financial gains. This study concludes that the higher the level of student involvement in online gambling, the lower the quality of their religious practices.
